One of the main culprit of this is what we call in the plumbing industry,a strainer. a strainer will often be found on the main waterline outside your house next to the wall plumb with a valve. in most cases its a brass coloured metal shaped in a y form.

Basic function of a strainer

have you ever wondered how your tap water is so clear yet it travelled so far from the purification facility to the resevoir and then all the way to your house. not to make you wary but there are some small stones and sediment that end up inside manucipality pipes not much of a health hazard but you still would not want to see your clean glass of water with small stones inside. this is where the strainer comes in, it is basically a meshed wire inside the strainer body that prevents small foreign objects from passing through.

3 ways to know if your strainer needs maintenance but not limited to these

1 - which is the obvious is seeing foreign stone like objects passing through your faucet

2 - your pressure regulating valve is making a high pitched wirring sound the moment water is used inside the house.

3 - your water pipes are losing pressure.

steps to check and maintain a strainer.

-close the main water valve of the house, this is usually place just before the strainer. if the valve is not installed, close the valve at the water meter.

-open any faucet close to the strainer to drain the pipes.

-remove the nut that is on the side of the strainer using a shifting spanner

-check to see if there is not dirt on the mesh and if it is still in good condition.

final tip! a strainer should always be in a horizontal position with the nut facing down, this makes it more efficient and easy to clean
